The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament is pleased to announce the annual PIT Student-Athlete Scholarship Program.  Scholarships of $4,000 will be awarded to a student-athlete from Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach. Starting this year, a $4000 scholarship will be awarded to a student-athlete from each of the public high schools in Portsmouth, bringing the total number of scholarships awarded to seven.  Each school may nominate one (1) student only.

The scholarships will be awarded to special and unique individuals who:

  • Are definitely going to pursue higher education and have a need for financial aid;

  • Have made significant contributions to athletics;

  • Will not receive any financial assistance in the form of a full athletic scholarship or appointment to one of the military academies;

  • Have the respect of coaches, peers, teachers and community.

The Selection Committee of the PIT will select one individual from each city who best exemplifies the description above.  Attributes of athletic participation, leadership, service and character will be considered.

  • Character – Reflects the qualities of honesty, integrity and courage;

  • Leadership – Possesses the capacity to lead and demonstrates the ability to provide direction that results in group achievement;

  • Scholarship – achieves above average grades, evidenced by proof provided by the nominating school that the student will be accepted by an institution of higher learning;

  • Athletic Participation – must have participated in a varsity sport for a minimum of two years including junior and senior years.

These criteria are intended as guidelines for selection.  Judgment of the Selection Committee will remain the determining factor in the selection process.

Nominations for scholarship recipients are submitted by the schools. Contact the high school Guidance Department or Scholarship Coordinator for more information.
