2010 Hook Hillman Award

Lopez M. Scott
Manor Youth Basketball League

The Harry "Hook" Hillman Memorial Award is presented each year to a person who has demonstrated a commitment to youth basketball in the local community. Bobby Cremins established this award in 1978 as a memorial to the impact Hook Hillman had made on his life.

This year's recipient is Lopez M. Scott a native of Portsmouth VA. He is married to Armentta, a schoolteacher at Western Branch High School and a father of four boys ages 20-37. A graduate of Wilson High School and also attended the University of Alaska. He works for the federal government as a K-9 Dog handler since 1983. He has also served in the Army and National Guard for 24 years.

He coaches the boys' team, ages 13-16 for the Manor Basketball League. He has been coaching for 27 years. He and his wife also work the concessions for the league.

He wants to teach his players to understand and care for the game and also learn guidance. His rewards are when a former player comes back from being in school or serving our country and says "Thanks Coach"



Chesapeake - $3,000 Scholarship
Eric Rife - Indian River High School

A four-year letter winner in wrestling, Eric was captain in 2009 and 2010. Eric is a member of the National Honor Society and ranks 7th out of a class of 406 with a 4.43 GPA and an SAT score of 1280. He plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in Engineering.
Norfolk - $3,000 Scholarship
Clayborne Cook - Maury High School

A four-year letter winner in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track, Clayborne was All-District in all three sports in 2007 through 2010. He also served as team captain in all three sports. Clayborne is a member of the National Honor Society and ranks 13th out of a class of 386 with a 4.4 GPA and an SAT score of 1120. He plans to attend the University of Virginia and major in Chemistry.
Portsmouth - $3,000 Scholarship
Monica Wilson - I.C. Norcom High School

A four-year letter winner in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track, Monica placed 9th in the state in the 100m Hurdles and 8th in the state in the 55m Hurdles. She also served as team captain in all three sports. Monica is a member of the National Honor Society and ranks 3rd out of a class of 290 with a 4.2 GPA and an SAT score of 1020. She plans to attend the University of Virginia and major in Computer Engineering.
Suffolk - $3,000 Scholarship
Alliannah Hamilton - Nansemond River High School

A four-year letter winner in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track, Alliannah served as captain of the Indoor Track Team. She ranks 80th out of a class of 280 with a 3.1 GPA. She is very active in the community and has been awarded the National Minority Leadership Award for her volunteer service to numerous non-profit organizations. Alliannah plans to attend Old Dominion University and major in Graphic Design.
Virginia Beach - $3,000 Scholarship
Matthew Schmit - Kellam High School

A three-year letter winner in Football, Matthew served as team captain and was voted team MVP for his play at quarterback in 2009. He ranks 1st out of a class of 438 with a 4.3 GPA and an SAT score of 1400. He plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in Aerospace Engineering.
Grand Scholarship - $3,500
Allison Munter - Grassfield High School (Chesapeake)

A four-year letter winner in volleyball, Allison was Southeastern District Player of the Year on 2009 and was named 1st Team All-Tidewater and 1st Team All-Region in both 2008 and 2009. Allison is a member of the National Honor Society and ranks 5th out of a class of 501 with a 4.6 GPA and an SAT score of 1390. She plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in History.
